The Lower Niobrara Natural Resources District (LNNRD) is working with producers to pilot advanced nitrogen management technology aimed at improving efficiency and protecting local water resources. This program supports the use of sensor- and model-based decision tools that provide real-time recommendations for nitrogen applications throughout the growing season.
As part of LNNRD’s ongoing efforts with groundwater management, this program helps producers better manage nitrogen timing and rates to reduce leaching and improve overall nutrient use efficiency. Participants enroll eligible acres into approved nitrogen management systems, such as Sentinel Ag or Adapt-N, and work with a certified agronomy advisor to implement recommendations.
Producers participating in this effort may also be eligible to apply for:
These programs can be layered together to provide additional incentives while implementing improved nitrogen management practices.
Participants commit to following nitrogen management plans, recording application data, and providing end-of-season information. In return, LNNRD offers cost-share support to help offset adoption costs and reduce risk when trying new technologies.
This pilot program is a practical step toward improving water quality across the district while supporting producers with tools that can enhance both productivity and long-term sustainability.
